Drone Categories

Consumer Drones

These are readily available to the public for recreational use, photography, and videography. They are typically easy to fly and come with user-friendly features.

Commercial Drones

Used for professional purposes like aerial photography, videography, inspections, agriculture, and delivery. They often have more advanced features and higher payload capacities.

Industrial Drones

Designed for heavy-duty tasks in industries like construction, mining, and infrastructure inspection. They can carry specialized equipment and sensors.

Military Drones

Used for surveillance, reconnaissance, and combat operations. They often have advanced technology for long-range flights, high-resolution cameras, and weapon systems.

Drone Formats

Quadcopter

The most common format, with four rotors for stability and maneuverability.

Hexacopter

With six rotors, these drones offer increased stability and payload capacity.

Octocopter

Eight rotors provide even greater stability and redundancy, often used for heavy lifting or specialized applications.

Fixed-wing

These drones resemble traditional airplanes and are more efficient for long-range flights. They are faster and can cover larger areas, making them suitable for mapping, surveillance, and delivery.

Types of Drones

Multi-rotor Drones

Multi-rotor Drone

These are the most common type, using multiple rotors (propellers) for lift and maneuverability. They are easy to control, can hover in place, and are great for aerial photography and videography.

Civilian Examples: DJI Mavic series, Parrot Anafi, Autel EVO

Military Examples: AeroVironment Puma, FLIR SkyRanger, Parrot ANAFI USA

Fixed-wing Drones

Fixed-wing Drone

These drones resemble traditional airplanes and are more efficient for long-range flights. They are faster and can cover larger areas, making them suitable for mapping, surveillance, and delivery.

Civilian Examples: SenseFly eBee, Wing, Parrot Disco

Military Examples: MQ-9 Reaper, RQ-4 Global Hawk, Shahed 136

Single-rotor Drones

Single-rotor Drone

Similar to helicopters, these drones use a single main rotor for lift and a tail rotor for stability. They offer good maneuverability and can carry heavier payloads.

Civilian Examples: Yamaha RMAX, Schiebel Camcopter S-100

Military Examples: MQ-8 Fire Scout, Boeing AH-6

VTOL (Vertical Take-off and Landing) Drones

VTOL Drone

These drones combine the benefits of multi-rotor and fixed-wing designs. They can take off and land vertically like a multi-rotor but transition to efficient forward flight like a fixed-wing.

Civilian Examples: DJI Matrice 300 RTK, Vertical Aerospace VA-X4

Military Examples: V-22 Osprey, Bell Eagle Eye
